Complementary Arts Organizations Merge to Achieve Efficiency Through Co-location

The Art Effect of the Hudson Valley (The Art Effect) (operates three arts education centers in Poughkeepsie, NY, reaching more than 8,000 young people annually through visual arts and media programming including art camps, community art events, arts-based workforce development, and more. Barrett Art Center (Barrett) was an arts organization in Poughkeepsie fostering an appreciation of visual arts through free exhibitions, education, and preservation. In late 2019, after learning that its historic building would require substantial renovation costs to remain habitable, Barrett approached The Art Effect to discuss the possibility of merging. The merger will allow all of the combined entity’s programming to operate exclusively from Poughkeepsie’s historic Trolley Barn, in addition to strengthening fundraising capacity and creating a comprehensive arts organization in the community. The SeaChange-Lodestar Fund for Nonprofit Collaboration provided a grant to support the costs of merging.
