The Mountain Institute (TMI) is an international NGO that works with high-mountain communities to address poverty, resource degradation, water scarcity, out-migration, and climate change that threaten their survival. Rare is a global conservation organization working directly with communities to better manage their natural resources, restore fish populations, protect coral reefs, ensure access to clean fresh water, and create a sustainable food supply. Recognizing the compatibility of their missions, TMI and Rare engaged in productive conversations about a potential merger, but ultimately decided the timing was not right. A grant from the SeaChange-Lodestar Fund for Nonprofit Collaboration helped fund a consultant who engaged the organizations during the due diligence phase.
