GivingTuesday Becomes a National Philanthropy Day

Modeled after the post-Thanksgiving consumer days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, GivingTuesday was created to inspire all sectors of society in communities around the world to support nonprofits on one dedicated day leading into the holiday season, the Tuesday following Thanksgiving. Lodestar provided the initial grant to launch the project in 2012; additional grants provided funding to support ongoing operations of the initiative. In 2019, GivingTuesday raised more than $500 million online and nearly $2 billion offline from donors around the world, spearheaded by active movements in more than 60 countries. In addition to raising funds, GivingTuesday has launched a global data collaborative to analyze giving data and disseminate findings to increase giving worldwide. In 2019, GivingTuesday became an independent nonprofit entity with an initial operating budget of approximately $4 million.
