Formal Collaboration of Two Connecticut Nonprofits Providing Housing and Healthcare Services to People Living with HIV/AIDS, Mental Health Challenges, and Substance Abuse Disorders

Leeway, Inc. is a housing and health system for people living with HIV/AIDS.  Liberty Community Services, Inc. provides housing and supportive services to help people transition from homelessness to temporary housing. The organizations provide complementary services, and both were started to respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, taking a housing first and harm reduction approach to serving their constituents. The board and staff leadership of both organizations agree that the opportunity to collaborate – either through a strategic alliance or more formally through a merger – should be explored to contribute to financial sustainability for the future while simultaneously allowing the organizations to provide more services for their clients. The SeaChange-Lodestar Fund for Nonprofit Collaboration provided a grant to help cover the costs of exploring this collaboration/merger.
