Like-Missioned Nonprofits Merge to Scale K-12 Financial Literacy Programs

Council for Economic Education (CEE) promotes economic and financial education for students in kindergarten through 12th grade through its educator training programs. Each year, CEE provides 55,000 teachers with its proprietary curriculum/lesson plans and pedagogical support through its 200 affiliates across the nation.  Invest in Girls (IG) promotes personal finance and financial literacy for girls in 10th through 12th grades.  In 2017, Invest in Girls undertook a strategic planning process that called for a geographic expansion, looking another organization that already had a national network in place and the infrastructure to support their program, which CEE did.  The benefits of a merger included program expansion, a broader funding base and professional development opportunities for staff.  The SeaChange-Lodestar Fund for Nonprofit Collaboration helped to fund one-time costs associated with the merger.
