Merger of Two Nonprofit Investigative Newsrooms

Mother Jones and The Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR), the nation’s longest- established nonprofit investigative newsrooms, with a combined 95 years of history, are exploring a merger to create the first truly multiplatform, nonprofit investigative newsroom. They aim to bring revelatory journalism to communities across the country, on any platform they prefer; support the growth of the nonprofit news ecosystem; and engage a public eager for trustworthy reporting. They can reach new audiences—especially those that have not always been served or centered by legacy media—with the information they need to engage as citizens. The Lodestar Foundation provided a grant to help cover the costs of exploring this merger.
