Merger of Two Organizations Focused on Improved Health Outcomes for Children

The Walking Classroom Institute (“Walking Classroom”) seeks to improve the physical, mental, and academic health of students. It develops educational podcasts accessible by app or on dedicated audio devices, and accompanying discussion guides. Alliance for a Healthier Generation (“Healthier Generation”) advances physical and social-emotional health by partnering with schools and youth-serving community organizations to ensure the places children live, learn, and play are conducive to healthy living. Through its unique online platform, Healthier Generation provides environmental assessment tools, training, and resources focused on physical education, nutrition, social-emotional health, and other health-related topics. Walking Classroom sought to scale its program so that more students could use it while learning from home. With only one full-time and four part-time staff, Walking Classroom did not have internal capacity to grow the program, and determined that merging with a larger organization with expansive school networks would be the most efficient way to scale up. The SeaChange-Lodestar Fund for Nonprofit Collaboration provided a grant to help fund the cost of implementation support for the merger.
